The Lake

In this first chapter we journeyed to East Africa to take a closer look at one of the biological treasures of the Great Rift Valley: Lake Tanganyika.

We caught a glimpse of the remarkable biodiversity of the lake and learned that Tanganyika’s old age is part of the reason we find such a rich cast of characters here. The stars of the Tanganyika’s spectacle of life are the cichlids, in all their various colors, shapes, and sizes.

Finally, we saw that Tanganyika isn’t only a life support system for aquatic creatures but also for the many people who depend on the lake for food and income.
